Los Cabos Hosts 2025 North American FootGolf Championship

The Los Cabos Country Club hosted the 2025 North American Foot Golf Championship in mid-August, bringing together national teams from Honduras, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Yes, FootGolf is exactly what it sounds like, a hybrid of soccer and golf. Players kick a soccer ball across a golf course, aiming for oversized holes while following the rules and strategy of traditional golf.

The Cabo tournament was an official qualifier for the 2026 FIFG FootGolf World Cup, making it the first international championship of its kind in Baja California Sur. The inaugural World Cup was held in Hungary in 2012.

The event opened with practice sessions before three days of competition in which athletes showcased precision and skill against the dramatic backdrop of Los Cabos.

At the awards ceremony, municipal tourism director Ana Gabriela Navarro highlighted the significance of the event.
“Hosting pioneering competitions like the North American FootGolf Championship demonstrates that Los Cabos continues to consolidate its position as a leading sports tourism destination,” she said. “These emerging sports diversify our tourism offering and boost international visibility.”

Mayor Christian Agúndez reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports tourism as a driver of economic and social development.

The sport originated in the Netherlands in 2009 and has since spread worldwide. Three World Cups have been held in Hungary (2012), Argentina (2016), and Morocco (2018). Courses feature 9 or 18 holes, and as in golf, the player with the fewest strokes, or kicks, wins.

By 2019, more than 30 FootGolf associations existed worldwide. Colombian player Wilson Castro, regarded as the world’s top competitor since 2024, has helped raise the sport’s profile with victories in international tournaments.

The official FootGolf League launched in Spain in 2014, followed by the first Grand Open in Marbella in 2015, which drew players from across the globe. American Mark Woodward won that inaugural stage.

Mexico has hosted tournaments in Acapulco, Mexico City, Cancun, Cuernavaca, Guadalajara, Mazatlán, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, Tlaxcala, Manzanillo, Morelos, and now Los Cabos. Annual tour membership is $70, covering both AFGL and FIFG licenses.

The sport also includes women’s and amateur divisions. Among the standout female players are Jannet Sánchez, Anjuli Ladrón, and Gabriela Febres.

As FootGolf continues to grow, Cabo’s hosting of the 2025 championship cements its place on the international sports tourism map.
