Los Cabos Cyclist Crowned National Children’s Champion

Mario Trejo, a 12-year-old cyclist from Los Cabos, captured the 2025 National Mountain Bike Championship and the National MTB Cup on Sunday, July 20, securing his status as one of Mexico’s most promising young athletes.

Trejo clinched the national title during the National Short Track and Cross-CountryChampionships held July 19–20 at Cacalomacán Ecological Park in Toluca, Mexico. The event brought together the country’s top youth mountain bikers.

With this double victory, Trejo is now officially recognized as the 2025 National Children’s Cycling Champion. His discipline, talent, and determination helped him outpace competitors from across the nation, capping off a stellar season.

Trejo’s rise began four years ago when, at just eight years old, he made headlines by finishing third at the rugged trails race in the 2021 MTB Hidalgo Federation Cup while representing Cabo San Lucas. “Inside that little knight, there is a champion beginning to emerge,” said local cycling enthusiast Yessi Moreno at the time.

In 2022, he returned to the national spotlight with another third-place finish at the National Children’s Cycling Championship, leading most of the 4.5-kilometer race before being narrowly edged out.

By 2023, Trejo had taken the top spot at the Junior Bike Grand Prix in San Luis Potosí, earning him qualification for an international race in the Netherlands. Competing in the 9-10 age category, he impressed with his speed and skill.

At 11, he won his division at the prestigious Grimminge Koers in Belgium, adding to a growing list of national and international victories that mark him as one of the world’s top young cyclists.

With mountain biking an Olympic event since 1996, Trejo may one day represent Mexico on the world’s biggest stage. For now, “Super Mario” continues to inspire pride in Los Cabos and Baja California Sur, and the future looks fast.
