Buying Protected Fishies Is a No-No!

The new Selecto Super Chedraui supermarket inside the Puerto Paraiso Mall is selling Parrot Fish, a protected species in Mexico since 2018. Parrot Fishies are critical to the health of ocean reef formations as they eat the weed and algae that asphyxiate coral with excess of proteins. Other local markets are also randomly selling Orange Groupers (Epinephelus coioides), which are not protected, but very rare, with a status of “Near Threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Local ecologists will report this to the proper authorities. Do not buy Parrot Fish!
