La Perla Hotel, a landmark on the La Paz Malecón, is set to reopen in 2026 as Perla La Paz, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, following a $10 million renovation.

Built in 1940 as the first modern hotel in Baja California Sur, La Perla played a key role in the modernization of the city’s waterfront. Originally featuring 25 rooms, the Art Deco property became a luxury destination frequented by celebrities including John Wayne and Bing Crosby. The renovation will preserve the hotel’s historic character while introducing modern amenities.

The hotel closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and did not reopen after changing ownership later that year. It has remained closed for six years.

Tourism Development and La Paz Growth

Agustín Olachea, president of the Association of Hotel and Tourism Companies (Emprhotur) in La Paz, said the property’s reopening is expected within months.

“In fact, the opening of Hotel Perla is coming soon. Its inauguration as a Hilton is coming soon, in no more than three months, and that will give La Paz even more hotel infrastructure,” Olachea said, highlighting ongoing tourism development efforts in the state capital.

Olachea said La Paz is focusing on attracting a diverse range of visitors rather than traditional spring break tourism.

“La Paz is diversifying. We are focusing on sports tourism, entertainment tourism, nature tourism, and sun-and-beach tourism. We have also made a strong effort to attract groups and conventions,” he said.

Amenities and Room Rates

According to the hotel’s official website, room rates for December 2026 range from approximately 4,500 pesos to more than 6,300 pesos per night, or about $260 to $365 USD.

The renovated property will feature 90 guest rooms, an outdoor pool, two restaurants, a fitness center and two meeting rooms.

The reopening marks the return of one of La Paz’s most recognizable historic hotels, though its higher room rates may place overnight stays beyond the reach of many residents.
