Los Cabos is working to strengthen its position as a global leader in beach certification, with local authorities emphasizing environmental protection, responsible coastal management, and public ecological awareness as key components of the effort.

The municipality, in coordination with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is seeking not only to increase the number of certified beaches but also to use those certifications as evidence that its beaches are being monitored, maintained, equipped, and managed according to internationally recognized environmental and tourism standards.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader commitment to preserving Los Cabos’ competitiveness as a premier coastal destination while protecting the natural resources that support its identity and tourism-driven economy.

Certifications Require Continuous Commitment

Rafael Álvarez, municipal coordinator of Zofemat, Mexico’s Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone office, said the certifications earned by Los Cabos beaches are more than symbolic distinctions. Rather, they represent an ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards through environmental monitoring, ecological education programs, and regular beach-cleaning efforts.

“These certifications require continuous work,” Álvarez said, noting that beaches must continue meeting the requirements established by certifying organizations long after recognition is granted. Officials view the certifications as both an achievement and a responsibility.

27 Certified Beaches, 39 Expected by 2026

In 2025, Los Cabos added three Blue Flag beaches, bringing its total to 27 certified sites. The list includes Chileno Bay, El Corsario, Hacienda, La Ribera, Las Viudas, Palmilla, Santa María, Acapulquito, and Médano Beach, among others.

For 2026, Zofemat reported that 12 more beaches are scheduled to join the Blue Flag program, which would increase the municipality’s total to 39 certifications.

The milestone is significant because it would place Los Cabos alongside Barcelona, Spain, widely regarded as an international benchmark for beach certification. Reaching a comparable number of certified beaches would position Los Cabos not only as a national leader in Mexico but also as a destination capable of competing with some of the world’s most recognized coastal cities.

Municipal leaders view certification as an ongoing process that requires sustained investment in maintenance, infrastructure, and day-to-day management. As Los Cabos continues expanding its portfolio of recognized beaches, officials remain focused on maintaining strong audit results, improving facilities and operations, promoting environmental education, and continuing cleanup and monitoring programs.
