Construction officially began Monday, December 22, on the El Novillo Dam, a major infrastructure project aimed at securing the region’s future water supply.
Local and federal officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony, which included a live connection with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The project represents an investment of 2.4 billion pesos (approximately $134 million USD) and will feature a 44-meter-high dam stretching 400 meters in length, with a storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters. Construction is expected to generate more than 700 direct and 1,400 indirect jobs.
Scheduled for completion by mid-2027, the dam will contribute an additional 50 liters per second to the city’s drinking water network, benefiting more than 250,000 residents. The plan also includes a 15-kilometer aqueduct and a water treatment plant as part of the overall system.
The initiative is part of the “More Water for La Paz” program, designed to ensure reliable water access through infrastructure improvements such as elevated tanks, network sectorization, and micro-metering across the state capital.
