Don Koll Olympic Pool Finally Opens

After many delays, the Don Koll Olympic pool in Cabo San Lucas has finally opened.

The facility, located in the Cangrejos neighborhood four miles northwest of downtown, was originally scheduled for a ribbon-cutting on Dec. 5, 2024. That event never happened, postponed repeatedly until the pool officially welcomed the public on Sept. 1, 2025.

On opening day, three women began competitive training under respected coach Aldemar Amaral, who drew praise from longtime colleagues and athletes.

“They are with a wonderful coach. Excellent start to the month, brother, all the success in the world,” said triathlete Stibaliz García Peralta of La Paz, who trained with Amaral when he coached at the La Paz Swimming Institute.

“With ‘Captain America’ Amaral, they are guaranteed success,” added runner Cristian Jahir Cortez, an AXXA insurance agent and former trainee. Fellow triathlete Jazmín Sui-qui, who has competed nationally, called herself “very proud of all his achievements as a teammate and friend.”

The pool’s debut comes eight years after construction was first announced. Officials hope it will elevate Los Cabos’ swimming program and give local athletes new opportunities.

“This ordeal has been a heavy burden for the Sports Institute,” said Ricardo Manríquez, Los Cabos Municipal Sports Director. “We could become the power in swimming that La Paz currently is. Now, many athletes will have the chance to compete in national CONADE games.”
