The fire departments of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo report a troubling rise in traffic accidents along the so-called Tourist Corridor, a stretch of the Transpeninsular Highway that sees heavy daily traffic.
An estimated 60,000 vehicles travel the route each day, and the municipality records more than 2,500 traffic accidents annually, an average of seven incidents per day, underscoring the urgent need for a dedicated Emergency Response Center.
Elva Castillo, National Councilor of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce (CONCANACO) for Baja California Sur, said efforts are underway to push for such a facility.
“We need a comprehensive center that includes a fire station, Red Cross, Civil Protection, and Public Prosecutor’s Office,” Castillo said. “There are accidents where people lose their lives or wait hours for help. The center should also have cranes, lifeguards, everything needed to preserve life and respond effectively to emergencies.”

Construction related to the modernization of the Fonatur roundabout is expected to begin within 10 days, with night-time lane closures planned for asphalt removal. Two lanes will be closed at night and reopened during the day.
Castillo noted that the ongoing infrastructure work presents an opportunity to incorporate the Emergency Response Center into the broader development plan. She emphasized the impact such a center would have, significantly reducing response times for medical assistance, rescues, accident control, and patient transport.
“The safety and protection of life is everyone’s responsibility,” Castillo said. “This isn’t about politics or institutions. It’s a human commitment. Every life we can save is worth the effort.”
