Sky Above, Earth Below, Peace WithinCueva del Tecolote – A Stunning Place to Visit

A small hill near El Pescadero features a scenic 1.8 km (1.11 mile) out-and-back trail that offers panoramic views of Playa Tecolote and Playa Balandra. Known for its viewpoints, caves, and stunning sunsets, the trail is a hidden gem. At the summit, a rock formation resembling an owl gives the area its name, Cueva del Tecolote.

The hike typically takes about 40 minutes and is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, or running. It’s an easy trail with minimal crowds, connecting you to both beaches and offering breathtaking views of the coastline and bay. Along the way, caves provide unique photo opportunities.

Sudcalifornios.com shared a firsthand account from local hikers, excerpted below. If you read Spanish, you can find more on their Facebook page.

The hill isn’t very tall but offers spectacular views of both beaches, perfect for sunset watching.

To begin, head to Playa Tecolote and park near the left side by the restaurant “La Parada” which faces the beach. From there, walk inland toward the desert. You’ll pass the reddish ruins of a small building. Just beyond is the trailhead.

The path is gentle, with a mild incline at the start and mostly level terrain, making it accessible for children and seniors. You could walk it in sandals, but it’s best to wear tennis shoes and bring water and sunscreen.

Once at the top, head right toward Balandra. The first landmark you’ll see is Playa Escondida, a secluded spot ideal for private camping. Just be prepared to carry your gear over the hill.

Continuing along the path, you’ll find an elevated ridge along the ocean, where waves crash directly against the rocks below. Keep going to reach a small peak with views of Balandra Beach’s end and Playa Escondida’s beginning.
