Historic Baja Hotel Closing for Good

The world famous Hotel Serenidad in Mulege, north of Loreto on the Sea of Cortes, is closing its doors at the end of April. Built in 1961 as a Fly-In hotel with its 4,000-foot landing strip, it became famous with small planes pilots who came down to fish and enjoy its famous Pig Roast dinner on Saturdays.

It remained among the favorites for Baja road travelers until this day. Located between the Mulege river and the lush low areas of the sierra, it is an enchanting, romantic, relaxing Mexican hotel. Hopefully someone will bring it back to life soon. Sob, sob.

  1. It was a grungy hotel in a bad and very poor area. Flying Samaritan’s flew in every month from the USA to give medical and dental treatment to the poor who lived there.

  2. Stayed there last in 2019, very comfortable oasis resort hotel. It has a long history serving both fly-in and drive-in customers. My first visit was in the 60s. Don and Nancy Johnson were great hosts… both have passed away and now, their hotel, too.

    1. I’ve been traveling to Baja for over 40 years and Serenidad has always been one of our favorite stops. The warmth and hospitality of the Johnson Family and the staff represent the best of Mexico
