The local government in Los Cabos is looking to create a pink taxicab fleet for women, seeking to guarantee accommodation for women.
In many cities not only in Mexico but around the world, pink cabs are being used to transport only women and they are driven by women. This movement started with the #MeToo movement as a social awareness campaign aiming to end sexual abuse, harassment, and rape culture.
During a meeting, the secretary of Los Cabos, Alberto Rentería, along with councilors, Valerie Olmos and Adriana Cosío, pointed out that they seek to promote the inclusion of women in the transportation sector.
“We are sure that the unions themselves will understand the importance of providing security and confidence to women through this type of specialized transportation. Our task will be to support the necessary efforts and disseminate this effort to make it a success,” said Rentería.
Likewise, they said that around 35 women are already part of the different transport unions and are working as taxi drivers. “The proposed strategy includes promoting more women to join these unions, with the aim of grouping together and, eventually, obtaining their own concessions to operate within the established system,” Olmos commented.
Finally, they highlighted that the next actions include the installation of new dialogue tables with the transport unions, to see the details and guarantee the viability of the project in search of gender policies and women's safety.
