Los Cabos Beaches Raise Red Flag Amid High Waves

Civil Protection authorities have issued a swell alert for Los Cabos for over the weekend, prompting widespread beach safety measures across the municipality.

The Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) has raised red flags at 47 beaches, prohibiting swimming in the Sea of Cortez due to dangerous conditions. Officials warn that waves could reach heights of up to 2.5 meters.

The alert comes during the Easter holiday period. Authorities estimate that as many as 150,000 people could visit local beaches this weekend.

“To safeguard the health and physical integrity of bathers, we are urging the public to remain out of the water,” said Francisco Cota, director of Civil Protection. He noted that strong swell conditions can generate hazardous return currents capable of pulling swimmers offshore.

Zofemat coordinator Rafael Álvarez emphasized the importance of following posted warnings and lifeguard instructions. “We ask beachgoers to pay close attention to flag colors and heed the guidance of lifeguards stationed along the coast,” he said.

The most hazardous conditions are expected along beaches in San José del Cabo, including Acapulquito, Costa Azul, and Las Palmas. In Cabo San Lucas, officials highlighted Medano Beach, particularly in front of Villas del Palmar, Villas del Arco, Villa La Estancia, and the Riu resorts, as well as Las Viudas and El Tule, as areas of concern.

Authorities continue to watch conditions and urge residents and visitors to exercise caution throughout the holiday weekend.
