Sea Lion Rescued After Being Injured by Fishing Hook in Cabo San Lucas Waters

Environmental authorities and civil organizations successfully rescued a sea lion after removing a fishing hook embedded in its face and neck in the waters off Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday, December 30.

The operation, carried out by the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area in coordination with marine specialists, ensured the animal’s safe return to the sea. According to the agency, the sea lion was found after an extensive search that allowed for timely intervention and prevented the injuries from becoming life-threatening.

The animal was spotted from the vessels PROFEPA 100 and Little Greg, which immediately alerted a specialized rescue team. Experts from the Mexico Marine Wildlife Rescue Center, Cabo Dolphins, and the Marine Megafauna and Fisheries Research Program at the State University sedated the sea lion to safely remove the Rapala-type hook.

After the successful procedure, the sea lion was released back into its natural habitat. Authorities emphasized the importance of proper disposal of fishing gear and community collaboration to protect marine life in the region.
