Uber and Mar Vivo Partner to Protect Baja California’s Coastline

Uber and Mar Vivo Foundation have joined forces to protect the Baja California Sur coastline from erosion through a community-based mangrove reforestation initiative in Bahía Magdalena.

The project is part of Uber Planet, a sustainable mobility option within the Uber app that allows riders in Mexico to offset the carbon footprint of their trips. Funding from Uber Planet supports conservation and restoration efforts across the country through partnerships with local organizations.

Mar Vivo, a nonprofit focused on community empowerment and marine conservation, leads the on-the-ground effort. The foundation envisions a future where both coastal communities and marine ecosystems thrive. In Bahía Magdalena, mangroves serve not only as a vital natural barrier against storms and erosion but also as a living symbol of the connection between people and the ocean.

Implemented through CETMAR’s School Environmental Management Program and the community initiative “Together We Are the Change,” the project combines mangrove planting with environmental education. It aims to engage youth, educators, and families in climate action.

In the first quarter of 2025, 183 residents participated in planting and monitoring activities, gaining firsthand knowledge of the ecological importance of mangroves: their role in carbon capture, coastal protection, and biodiversity support.

Seventeen educational sessions, held both in classrooms and on-site, supplemented the fieldwork. The project is now in a follow-up phase, with ongoing technical and community monitoring to track seed survival and growth.

Uber Planet also supports other reforestation and forest conservation efforts in regions like Durango and the Sierra Gorda in Querétaro.

To activate Uber Planet, users can go to the Settings section in the Uber app, tap Trip Preferences, and select Planet to help reduce the carbon impact of their rides.
