The Los Cabos City Council has designated 44 properties as temporary shelters, strategically distributed throughout the municipality. The plan is intended to help balance population density in high-risk areas during the 2026 hurricane season.
According to the publicly released list, 14 shelters are in Cabo San Lucas. Among them is CBTIS No. 256 in the Arcos del Sol neighborhood, which offers greater capacity and access to medical services at a nearby hospital located about 100 yards away.
In the Lomas del Sol neighborhood, three elementary schools have been identified as shelters: Carmen Fisher Cota, Héroes de 1847, and Fernando I. Cota Sández. Three more schools in the Las Palmas neighborhood will also be used, along with one school in Gastélum and two primary and junior high school campuses in downtown Cabo San Lucas.
San José del Cabo and Rural Communities
In San José del Cabo, the initial shelter plan includes three schools in downtown neighborhoods, as well as several others in the communities of El Zacatal, Guaymitas, San Bernabé, La Ballena and Chamizal.
An added 20 school campuses have been designated as shelters in rural areas of San José del Cabo, including Buena Vista, El Campamento, Boca de la Sierra, Las Casitas and the Delegación community. In Cabo Pulmo, Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School has been designated as the community’s emergency refuge. Other communities included in the shelter network are Santa Cruz, La Candelaria, La Trinidad, San Jofre, Palo Escopeta, Santa Catarina and Álamo.
Activation and Safety Oversight
Officials said the opening of shelters will depend on the intensity and proximity of storms and rainfall. As a result, not all designated shelters will necessarily be activated. However, their availability is part of the municipality’s hurricane preparedness plan.
Community shelters will remain under the supervision of public safety personnel, military authorities and local police officers to help maintain order and ensure public safety.
