Illegal Dumping Along Streams Could Result in Fines up to $68,500

Streams and arroyos in Los Cabos have become illegal dumping grounds, raising concerns that seasonal rains could carry trash to the sea, which has happened in the past.

Local government officials have had enough. They warn anyone caught dumping in these areas will face fines of up to $68,500 US (1.3 million pesos). Drones will be used to identify violators.

Illegal dumping in streams and vacant lots remains a major environmental issue in Los Cabos, especially with the return of the rainy season. Gustavo Castro, Director of Environmental Management and Regulation, explained this practice contaminates soil and threatens marine ecosystems when debris is washed into the Cabo San Lucas Bay and Sea of Cortez.

During the current administration, authorities imposed 18 sanctions for unauthorized dumping, with fines ranging from $70 to $68,500 US, depending on the severity of the offence. Vehicles used for dumping, mainly trucks, have also been confiscated.

“We’ve gathered data through enforcement efforts against illegal dumping,” said Castro. “Even if it’s a stream or arroyo, the city oversees and protects these areas. We’ve issued 18 violations and seized polluting vehicles. Offenders are also required to clean affected stream sections.”

Drones are being used to monitor dumping and detect pollution in real-time, helping identify illegal garbage burning, another persistent problem. The most impacted areas include the creek leading to the Bocana near the San José del Cabo Estuary and the Cascadas Beach channel in Cabo San Lucas, both prone to debris flowing into the ocean.

Authorities are urging the public to stop this harmful practice and report violators. The damage goes beyond aesthetics, it pollutes the soil, harms marine life, and taints the image of a tourism-driven destination. Notably, officials claim those responsible are rarely expats, but rather residents showing little regard for the city’s well-being.
