Wanna Become a Paramedic?

We tell you where to go

Do you know someone interested in becoming a paramedic? The Cabo San Lucas Fire Department has opened pre-registration for individuals aged 17 and older for its Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program. The course lasts 16 months and aims to prepare a second generation of paramedics through its School of Medical Emergency Technicians. This initiative targets young people eager to serve their community in emergency care.

“This would be the second generation of paramedics for the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department,” said training coordinator Rubén Rauda. The course combines theoretical and hands-on instruction to prepare participants to respond effectively in emergencies, an essential skill set in a tourist destination like Los Cabos, where pre-hospital care needs are especially high.

Rauda acknowledged that Baja California Sur still lags behind other Mexican states in emergency medical training but noted steady progress. “We’re a bit behind compared to the rest of Mexico, but we’ve made advances. Schools like the Mexican Red Cross are gaining traction with their programs. In a tourist area like this, we require a higher skill level than in many other regions,” he said.

The training program is certified by the National Competence System (CONOCER) and Mexico’s Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Graduates of the 16-month program will receive an officially recognized certification. SEP’s mission is to ensure access to inclusive and comprehensive education throughout Mexico, particularly in areas of greatest need.
