Beach Patrols Return to Duty on the Beaches of Los Cabos and La Paz

Spring Break is over, but there’s still more to come

Holy Week in Mexico begins on April 13 and runs through April 20. It is the official vacation period for schoolchildren, and many visitors are expected to gather on the beaches of Los Cabos.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, local authorities have developed an annual plan to minimize incidents.

This year, more than 70 lifeguards and first aid teams will be stationed across 47 beaches in Los Cabos as the municipality prepares to welcome thousands of tourists and residents during Holy Week.

An estimated 75,000 people are expected to visit Los Cabos’ beaches throughout the week. In response, the authorities will launch a special operation covering more than 47 beach areas, supported by at least 72 lifeguards deployed to the most crowded locations.

Of these lifeguards, 30 will be provided by the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department, 20 by the San José del Cabo Fire Department, and 22 certified lifeguards regularly working with ZOFEMAT (Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone).

Rafael Álvarez, municipal coordinator for ZOFEMAT, confirmed the operation is a joint effort with the fire departments of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. In total, they will contribute 50 personnel, in addition to the 22 lifeguards already assigned by ZOFEMAT.

El Tule and La Rivera beaches are expected to draw the largest crowds, especially due to scheduled events and beach parties. The 22 beaches certified under the Blue Flag program will be open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. After this time, safety flags will be taken down and visitors will be asked to leave.

Camping is not allowed on certified beaches, but day use with tents is permitted.

Álvarez noted that camping is allowed in other areas of the municipality, provided safety regulations are followed, such as avoiding open flames and ensuring trash is collected. Public restrooms, trash containers, and drinking water will also be available to support visitors.

Beaches where camping is allowed include Migriño, Elías Calles, Punta Gorda, Cabo del Este, Rancho Leonero, Miramar, Faro de Punta Arenas in La Ribera, and Arbolitos Beach in Cabo Pulmo National Park.
