Last year, 22,299,383 foreigners arrived in the country, which represented an increase of 2% over the previous year. It was the smallest variation since the 58.3% drop in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The proximity of Mexican destinations, mainly to the beaches, meantAmericans had an extraordinary participation rate of 72.7% in the tourist recovery process in 2021. In that year, Mexico was second among the most visited countries in the world. The first was France. In the latest UN Tourism ranking of 2023, Mexico ranked sixth.
According to the INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), international tourists arriving in Mexico by plane represent 82% of the total foreign currency earned, which reflects the relevance of the US market.
Last year, five of the ten main international routes to Mexico, took off from a US airport: Dallas/Fort Worth-Cancún, Los Angeles-Guadalajara, Houston-Cancún, Chicago-Cancún and Miami-Mexico.
Canada remains in second place as the issuing country, where 2.6 millionpeople traveled to Mexico last year, an increase of 7% over the previous year, mainly on the route: Toronto-Cancun.
Colombia has the third position with 613,188 travelers, although the figure was 16.6% lower than in 2023, when it was set to get closer to one million. The drop is related to various complications faced by Colombians who would like to enjoy the tourist attractions of Mexico, but who in some cases, despite meeting the requirements, have not been allowed to cross the border with Mexico.
