Karina de la O has come up with an innovative proposal that blends environmental sustainability with community improvement. Scheduled to launch as a pilot program in February in Cabo San Lucas, the initiative will allow residents to exchange recyclable PET plastics for solar-powered street lighting in their neighborhoods.
The process is simple: residents collect four super bags full of PET plastics—such as Coca-Cola bottles, water bottles, and containers for shampoo and fabric softener—and trade them for light poles. Each pole will be cemented into the ground and equipped with two solar lamps, each ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 watts, capable of illuminating over 10,000 sq. feet.
Karina de la O emphasizes that the program aims to enhance safety and provide well-lit environments for the families benefiting from this initiative. Furthermore, it encourages community participation in recycling efforts, significantly reducing the volume of plastics ending up in landfills.
Residents can request super bags to begin collecting eligible plastics. Once they have filled four bags, they can exchange them for solar lighting, thereby contributing directly to the safety and sustainability of their community.
