Impoverished Neighborhood Loses Kids’ Classroom. The wooden classroom that was used for about 35 children from the La Ballena, Puerto Nuevo and Nueva Esperanza neighborhoods, was apparently set on fire on purpose, and most of it, including books, was destroyed. The National Council of Education Promotion which serves children in needy areas, has not obtained the funds to build a concrete classroom, so the residents are asking for donations of material, rather than cash. Information: (624) 126-8813 & (624) 159-7240. The 2024-2025 school year begins on August 26 and they hope to have a new classroom by then.
Two New Elementary Schools Under Construction.Less than a month ago we reported that about 35 elementary school kids were studying under a tree as their wooden schoolroom went up on fire. A week later, the state’s education secretariat announced that they are already building a new school for them in Cabo San Lucas, and a second one in la Miranda barrio in San Jose. Both are impoverished neighborhoods. Hoooray!

New Cabo Pulmo Development Under Fire. The proposed 1,500+ acres Baja Bay Club tourist development, which would bring a golf course, 442 villas and 275 hotel rooms to an oceanfront site less than a mile from the Cabo Pulmo National Park, is being opposed by ecology-minded organizations. The “Cabo Pulmo Vivo” and the Mexican Center of Environmental Rights (CEMDA) organizations claim that the resort could seriously affect the Cabo Pulmo reefs and rich marine life by dumping salt and chemicals in the brine left over from desalination back to the ocean, which can threaten local marine ecosystems. In addition, it could create pollution if a sewage treatment plant is not built or, if built, not well operated. Stay tuned.
Obesity, a Major Problem in Southern Baja. Early this year, UNESCO named La Paz one of its “Learning Cities,” which will allow its citizens to continue getting educated in several areas. One of the most worrying, said UNESCO, is obesity, which has reached 49 percent of children and 79 percent of adults in our Baja California Sur state, which ranks third in the national ranking of overweight inhabitants. Should we quit eating tacos?
