Demand for Real Estate Growing. Not only luxury homes and condos are in high demand, the growth is now extending to upper middle and middle class. In the first quarter of this year, the demand has grown 69 percent in our Southern Baja state. This makes us number 10 in the growth of real estate sales in Mexico. Can someone just send us more water?
More Water for Popular Neighborhood. The Lomas del Sol barrio, located along the road to the Cabo San Lucas airport, will be receiving an additional 10.5 gallons of water per second. This, thanks to the finding of water well # 5. The water will be flowing in 30 days maximum, when the installation of the pumping and piping system is done.
Marathon, Triathlon and Swimming Competitions Announced. During the months of May and June, Los Cabos will hold three sports events. The first is the Los Cabos Cortes Open, a swimming competition at Palmilla on May 6, for 1.3, 3, 5 and 7 Kilometers. One week of Jazz announced. In celebration of the International Jazz Day, which was created by the UNESCO on April 30, 2011 at the request of Herbie Hancock, local musician Tito Rodriguez is organizing the local fest. It will run from April 26 to May 1st with 6 bands from La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos and Mexico City. Stay tuned for venues which will be announced soon.
Dollar General Stores Do Mexico. The first Dollar General store in Mexico opened in the city of Escobedo, in the northeast state of Nuevo Leon. With an investment of $15 million USD, the chain will open 34 more in northern Mexico this year, without naming locations yet. DO you love Dollar General, or hate it?
Lots of Fishing Tournaments This Year. Fonmar, the fund for the protection of marine resources announced that there will 79 tournaments in our state this year. They begun April 8 in La Ribera in the East Cape and will continue in Puerto San Carlos, San Juanico, La Paz, Lopez Mateos, Cabo San Lucas and Loreto this month. These do not include private tournaments like the Von Wormer’s in Los Barriles or those at the Spa Buenavista. Please catch and release!
Airport Reports Passengers Increase. During the month of March, the Los Cabos international airport had an increase of 15.4 percent in the number of passengers compared to last year, being the second highest increase in Mexico. Only Guadalajara reported an increase of 19.1 percent, while Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana had lower numbers.
Local Orange Production to Break Record. The production of oranges in the santo Domingo Valley is expected to reach 70,000 metric tons, according to a report from the state’s agriculture secretariat. The orange production, which is nearly 25,000 metric tons up from last year supports 1,000 workers and will sell for an estimated $23 million dollars. The valley is in ciudad Constitucion, north of La Paz.
Los Cabos Government Will Sell Land. Mayor Oscar Leggs said that his administration is legalizing 1,200 lots on the road to Todos Santos and will sell them to people living in high risk areas at low prices. His government is also in negotiation with the Ejido landowners to acquire more lots.
More Water for La Paz, Soon. Mayor Milena Quiroga stated that the executive project to build a water potabilization plan to extract water from the La Buena Mujer (the good woman) dam is finished. The plant will be built this year and will produce from 13 to 15 gallons per second for the city of La Paz. In the meantime, shower with a friend!
Workcation Trend is Not Stopping. According to a report by Go City, the popularity of workcation is not stopping but instead expanding this year. The study revealed that 50 percent of Gen Zers and 30 percent of American travelers plan to enjoy a workcation this year. This helps vacation rental properties as well as real estate sales, which makes most of us Cabo residents happy.
Oyster Farming is Big In Our State. With a current production of 2,200 tonnes a year, the oyster farming supports 600 people, most of them women. There are 135 farms throughout the Southern Baja state, 106 of which are in Comondu, north of Loreto. Most of the production is exported to the U.S.
Foodie Event for a Cause Announced. The 10th “Pazion por el Sabor” gastronomic event will take place on Cinco de Mayo and the tickets are already on sale. The venue is the Paraiso del Mar development on El Mogote, there will be food from over 100 restaurants, wine, craft beer and live music. Tickets are 2,000 pesos (about $110 bucks) and are for sale at the DIF offices (which will be the beneficiary) located on Nayarit street corner with Ignacio Ramirez from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Let’s go!
Thousands of People Coming to East Cape! Due to Holy and Easter week school vacations, thousands of people are expected to come down to East Cape beaches to camp out, as it is a tradition. Many come from the already full beaches of La Paz and Los Cabos, so be prepared!
Tennis Tournament Announces Dates. The popular ATP 250 series, also known as Los Cabos Open, will take place this summer for the last time. No, they are not cancelling subsequent tourneys, but they will move it to November next year. Tickets are already for sale at: https://abiertoloscabos.com/en/tickets-2023/
Thousands of Langostillas Beached In. The beaches of Mag Bay, in the municipality of Comondu north of Loreto, have seen the arrival of thousands of Langostillas (Pleuroncodes planipes), sometimes called the pelagic red crab (or simply “red crab”) or tuna crab. It is a species of squat lobster from the eastern Pacific Ocean. They live on the continental shelf west of Mexico but are also usually found southwest of San Diego. Local environmental authorities still don’t know the cause of the mass beaching, if it’s due to pollution, bacteria or other toxic causes. ,
