The beaches of Mag Bay, in the municipality of Comondu north of Loreto, have seen the arrival of thousands of Langostillas (Pleuroncodes planipes), sometimes called the pelagic red crab (or simply “red crab”) or tuna crab. It is a species of squat lobster from the eastern Pacific Ocean. They live on the continental shelf west of Mexico but are also usually found southwest of San Diego. Local environmental authorities still don’t know the cause of the mass beaching, if it’s due to pollution, bacteria or other toxic causes.
