New Restrictions to Vehicle Traffic. The center for renewable energy and environmental quality reported that our state has more vehicles per home than any other in Mexico. No wonder traffic around Los Cabos is so high. Now the city government is planning to ban large cargo trucks from entering urban zones during rush hour. That would be from 6 to 8 a.m., from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. The key word here is “planning.” Stay tuned.

More Airlines Planning to Fly to Cabo. During the recent “Tianguis” Turistico, or tourist pow-wow, more airlines showed interest in flying to Los Cabos soon. Our tourism officials met with 18 of them: Viva Aerobus, Volaris, Copa Airlines, TUI, North Atlantic Airways, Porter, Swoop, Allegiant, American Airlines, Breeze, Flair, Lynx and JSX. Tourism Pow-Wow Shows Incredible Growth. The results of the 47th Tianguis Turistico show that the sales volume grew a stunning 8%. The secretariat of tourism reports that there were 88,432 business appointments of which 53% resulted in sales. The number of buyers grew by 34 percent. That’s how much interest the world has in visiting Mexico!
Mexico’s Unemployment Reaches Historic Low. As in only 2.7%, according to INEGI, Mexico’s institute or statistics. What about the informal economy? It keeps growing, and now reaches 55.5% of total employment. Both numbers show a great turnout following the negative numbers that the pandemic caused.
New Flights Landing in La Paz. As a result of the meetings during the Tianguis turistico (tourist pow-wow) in Mexico City, two airlines are now landing in La Paz. One flies in from Mazatlán with Volaris airlines, while TAR airlines flies in from Chihuahua. Time to visit the Tarahumara Sierra!
Plan to Reduce Vehicle Traffic Proposed. Southern Baja’s lawmaker Lorena Gonzalez presented an initiative in Congress that might help reduce vehicle traffic by up to 20% during weekdays. As they do in other parts of Mexico to combat pollution, vehicles having license plates with a certain last digit cannot be driven on a certain day of the week, actually reducing traffic. Public transportation and taxis would not be included. Los Cabos Mayor Oscar Leggs thinks it’s a funny idea, so it won’t happen.
Immigration Increasing Airport Staff. During the weekends, the immigration staff has been increased to 20 plus two supervisors to process incoming tourists. The wait time has been reduced to 45 minutes but the goal is to get people through in a maximum of 15 minutes. Hang on, pilgrims!
Great Number of Whales Spotted. The national commission of natural protected areas (CONANP) reports that at last count, there are 1,364 Gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) in Southern Baja, up 238 from last season. They have been sighted in El Vizcaino, Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons. Among them are 491 calves who were born here. Yes, Pacific gray whales are born mostly in Southern Baja, so they are Mexicans!
Who Americans Love Most? Us! A newly released study from InsureMyTrip, which delves into the travel habits, wants, and needs across four age groups – Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z—found that Mexico is the number one international destination across all four demographics. The report’s creators surmise that Mexico’s popularity across generations is due to it being so budget friendly. InsureMyTrip says Mexico is one of the cheapest vacations, with an average trip cost of $3,323. (with information by TravelPulse).
San Jose del Cabo Bomberos Now Have a Ladder Truck! The San Jose, CA. Fire Dept donated a ladder truck to the San Jose Fire Department. The Bomberos are currently training pump operations, rope rescues and hotel evacuations. You will see the ladder truck around the city. L1 will be one of the few active ladder trucks in Southern Baja. Thank you San Jose, CA. and congrats San Jose del Cabo!
More Flights Coming! It seems that nobody wants to be left without visiting Los Cabos. The FITURCA (Los Cabos Tourism Fund) just announced that new domestic routes will begin this year. They are direct flights from Queretaro (Central Mexico), Toluca (near Mexico City) and Mexicali in Northern Baja. An international flight will also be added in October from Kansas City. This will be the 27th U.S. city to send tourists to Cabo. Hoooray!
The PGA Tour Moves to Los Cabos This Year. The Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal golf course at Diamante Cabo San Lucas will now host the World Wide Technology Championship. The tourney will replace the LIV Venue professional golf tour. The name “LIV” refers to the Roman numerals for 54, the score of every hole on a par-72 course was birdied and the number of holes to be played at LIV events. Woods’ course is a par-72, 7,300-yard course with spectacular views of the Pacific.
La Paz to Add 250 Hotel Rooms Soon. The first to open is the remodeled La Perla hotel located downtown, operated by Hamak Hotels, scheduled to open sometime this year. The second one will be the Chable Sea of Cortez with 50 suites on nearly 16 acres of land. This will make for a total of 2,206 hotel rooms in La Paz.
