Early August in Baja California Sur continues to offer excellent sportfishing opportunities from La Paz to Cabo San Lucas. The warm waters of the Sea of Cortez support healthy populations of Billfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, and other popular game species. Whether fishing from a large offshore cruiser, a panga, or directly from the shoreline, anglers have a wide range of productive options across the region.
The La Paz Region
The La Paz area is experiencing strong late-summer fishing conditions, with Dorado leading the offshore catch reports. Fish are commonly found around floating debris, weed lines, and current breaks where bait is concentrated. Yellowfin Tuna remain a consistent target in offshore waters, while occasional Striped Marlin encounters add to the area’s appeal. Nearshore anglers continue to find success targeting Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, and other reef-oriented fish. The variety of available species makes La Paz one of Baja Sur’s most versatile fishing destinations.
East Cape Corridor
The East Cape Corridor delivers some of Baja Sur’s most diverse fishing opportunities. Dorado are abundant along offshore current lines, while Yellowfin Tuna are holding around bait-rich areas and other structures. Marlin activity remains steady, particularly for Blue and Black Marlin in deeper offshore waters. Along the beaches and rocky points, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, and other inshore species provide consistent action. The combination of offshore and coastal fisheries makes the East Cape a favorite destination for anglers seeking diversity.
San José del Cabo and Gordo Banks
Fishing activity around San José del Cabo and the Gordo Banks remains highly productive, and Yellowfin Tuna is still a primary attraction as schools gather around the banks where forage is abundant. Dorado delivers steady action near floating debris and current breaks, while Blue and Black Marlin remain active in offshore waters. Closer to shore, anglers encounter Roosterfish, Snapper, and Jack Crevalle. The area’s combination of deep-water structure and accessible coastal habitat continues to support excellent fishing opportunities.
Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is entering one of its most productive seasons of the year. Offshore anglers are finding opportunities for Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin, along with consistent numbers of Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna. Warm water temperatures and abundant baitfish are creating favorable conditions throughout the offshore grounds. Nearshore waters continue to offer Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, and other coastal species. The wide range of available game fish makes Cabo a premier destination for anglers seeking both quantity and variety.
Outlook Summary
Sportfishing conditions throughout Baja California Sur are expected to remain favorable through the month of August. Warm water temperatures and abundant bait concentrations continue to support strong offshore action for Marlin, Dorado, and Yellowfin Tuna. At the same time, nearshore fisheries remain productive for Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Snapper, and other coastal species. Anglers throughout the region can expect diverse, mixed-bag opportunities and the potential for memorable catches as summer fishing conditions continue to peak.

Fishkiller of the Week
Aboard the 62-foot Viking sportfishing vessel CHASIN TAIL, captained by Pepe and Ramon, anglers Erica McGraw, Jay McGraw, and London McGraw of Los Angeles, California, enjoyed a productive offshore excursion approximately 30 miles from shore at Location 180. Fishing under favorable conditions, the group successfully targeted Yellowfin Tuna weighing between 60 and 70 pounds, utilizing a combination of trolling lures and bait presentations.
