Since the season officially began on June 1, only one named tropical cyclone has developed — a pattern that has experts watching closely as conditions typically expected during El Niño years continue to dominate the basin.

Tropical Storm Arthur, which formed near the Texas coast and made landfall within hours, remains the season’s only named storm so far. While it caused flooding in parts of the Gulf of Mexico, Arthur’s brief life was cut short by hostile atmospheric conditions that continue to suppress storm formation across the Caribbean and western Atlantic.

Wind Shear Reaches Historic Levels

The defining feature behind this year’s calm has been intense wind shear — a shift in wind speed or direction at different atmospheric levels that can tear tropical systems apart or prevent them from forming altogether. According to data analyzed by CNN and NOAA, wind shear over the Caribbean recorded its second-strongest early July reading since satellite records began in 1979.

“The main characteristic of El Niño is precisely that wind shear,” said Michael Lowry, a Miami-based hurricane specialist working with WPLG-TV and CNN. The shear has established itself firmly over the Caribbean and western Atlantic — areas that would typically be active zones for tropical development this time of year.

Specialists from NOAA and Colorado State University note that the observed conditions align with expected behavior during El Niño-dominated years. The phenomenon, officially declared in June, is characterized by unusually warm water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which alters global atmospheric circulation and weather patterns for extended periods.

What This Means for Baja California Sur

For residents, expats and visitors in Baja California Sur, the implications are twofold. While the Atlantic remains unusually quiet, the Pacific hurricane season follows its own rhythm — and El Niño conditions do not suppress Pacific storm activity in the same way.

BCS sits along the eastern Pacific hurricane corridor, where storms typically form off the coast of southern Mexico and track northward along the Baja Peninsula. The region’s hurricane forecast this year called for near-normal to slightly above-normal activity in the eastern Pacific, and that projection remains in place despite the Atlantic slowdown.

In other words: a quiet Atlantic does not mean a quiet Pacific. The two basins operate independently, driven by different oceanic and atmospheric patterns. While El Niño creates hostile conditions for Atlantic hurricanes, it can actually enhance moisture and storm potential in parts of the Pacific, including waters near the Baja Peninsula.

The Atlantic Niña Factor

This year’s Atlantic calm has been further reinforced by an unusual oceanic pattern known as the Atlantic Niña — a cooling of sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Atlantic. According to Infobae and NOAA, water temperatures in the region have dropped at least 0.5°C below average for consecutive seasons, a condition that has only occurred five times since 1980.

The combination of a strong El Niño in the Pacific and an Atlantic Niña in the tropical Atlantic creates a rare double effect that acts as a shield against hurricane formation. Strengthened trade winds push warm surface water away, allowing cooler deep water to rise — a process that further suppresses the warm ocean temperatures hurricanes need to form and intensify.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center updated its forecast on July 9, reporting a 97% probability that El Niño will continue into early 2027 and an 81% chance it will reach “very strong” intensity between October and December. If those projections hold, the Atlantic’s quiet stretch could extend well into the traditional peak months of August, September and October.

What Residents Should Watch

Even in a suppressed Atlantic season, forecasters caution that it only takes one storm to make an impact. Residents across Baja California Sur should continue monitoring Pacific weather updates, especially as the region approaches the typical peak months for eastern Pacific hurricane activity.

Local emergency management agencies recommend reviewing hurricane preparedness plans regardless of seasonal forecasts. That includes securing outdoor furniture, stocking emergency supplies, and identifying evacuation routes. For condo owners and property managers in Los Cabos, La Paz and Todos Santos, now is the time to inspect drainage systems, roof integrity and storm shutters.

While this year’s Atlantic silence is noteworthy — and welcome news for Caribbean and Gulf Coast communities — it serves as a reminder that climate patterns shift, and Pacific storms remain a local reality. Forecasters will continue monitoring both basins as the season progresses, with special attention to whether El Niño’s influence persists through the fall.

For now, the Atlantic remains historically calm. But for those living along Baja’s Pacific coast, the message is unchanged: stay prepared, stay informed, and do not let a quiet Atlantic create complacency about local Pacific storm risks.
