Cruise Ship Tourism in BCS Up 8.6%

Cruise ship tourism in Baja California Sur was up by 8.6 percent during the first ten months of 2025. Officials project the year will close with about 1.2 million cruise passengers, marking a full recovery for a sector that had declined during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maribel Collins Sánchez, head of the BCS Tourism and Economy Secretariat, reported that in December, 44 cruise ships arrived in Los Cabos, 7 in La Paz, and 6 in Loreto, evidence, she said, of growing preference among cruise lines for destinations in southern BCS.

“From January to October, 973,490 cruise passengers arrived, an 8.6% increase over last year’s 896,000 arrivals. By year’s end, we expect to reach 1.2 million passengers, which is an excellent number,” Collins said.

Cruise passengers spend an average of $70 each during port stops in BCS, generating an estimated $84 million in economic activity, according to the Baja California Sur Port Authority (API BCS). The 77,490 additional visitors recorded between January and October represent the highest number since the pandemic began.

Collins attributed the recovery to the cruise industry’s gradual rebound after global health restrictions. “At first, during the pandemic, there was little activity because people were afraid to travel in large groups,” she noted.
