The arrival of the cargo vessel Santa Marcela from Ireland on Saturday, August 10, 2025, is set to increase sea cargo capacity between La Paz and mainland Mexico by 40%.
The ship was welcomed with a ceremony led by Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Castro and Blanca Guerrero, CEO of Transportación Marítima de California (TCM). Navy and Merchant Marine representatives, city council members, and community leaders also attended.

More than 200,000 cargo units move annually between the mainland and La Paz via the Cabo Star ferry, operated by Baja Ferries. The company, the region’s leading ferry service, transports both passengers and goods between Mazatlán and Pichilingue, an industrial port area near La Paz.
Most cargo consists of vehicles, passenger cars and freight trucks, though ferries also carry other goods. The crossing takes about 14 hours.
