Restaurants That Don’t Break the Bank

Breakfast: Panache European Restaurant. We have enjoyed many dinners alone and with friends at the fabulous European Restaurant Panache in Cabo San Lucas. We decided that it was time to try their breakfast. The new location, just off the main road into Cabo San Lucas on the side road to the right just after McDonalds, offers great seating in a pleasant environment, and valet parking.

We were given our choice of tables (unlike dinner where reservations are a must). The menu has a great selection of both traditional and European breakfast choices: pancakes, eggs, waffles, six different croques (French breakfast sandwiches), croissants, crepes, bagels and lox, and of course, Eggs Benedict.

Beth decided to have an omelet with vegetables, tater tots and a side of crisp bacon. The omelet was huge and cooked to perfection with baby carrots, cauliflower, onions, mushrooms, and more. The tater tots were great (I snuck a few). I ordered the Eggs Benedict with salmon, which comes with a pink hollandaise sauce and choice of salad (Caesar or mixed). I chose the Caesar. The plate was piled high with the salad with its delicious Caesar dressing and croutons.

As always, the quality, portions, and presentation of the food was excellent. The service was perfect and new location very nice. It had started to fill up by the time we were finished our early breakfast.

Lunch: The New Funky Olive

Located in the mall in Cabo San Lucas, down the steps toward the marina, is The New Funky Olive. It is “New” as it was taken over by Johnny Cabo in October 2023 with some significant changes to the menu and the staff. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. On the patio at the front of the restaurant, you can people watch as they stroll in and out of Puerto Paraiso or watch the boats docked in the marina.

The menu is extensive, divided between offerings from the Sushi Bar, which is set up inside, and the regular menu. The regular menu has snacks, items from the sea, tacos, pizza, hamburgers and sandwich specials. The Sushi Bar menu includes appetizers, basic and special rolls, and salads. There is also a Kid’s Menu. As we were reviewing the menu, our server provided us with tortilla chips and two salsas in a cone shaped serving dish. Beth ordered the Baja-style shrimp tacos in flour tortillas. There were three tacos with two or three breaded shrimp in each, served with guacamole, two salsas, and coleslaw. I decided to try the Sushi Bar and started with the Funky Sashimi. There were 16 pieces of fresh tuna with an avocado dab on each, a small slice of lemon, and onions in a yuzu sauce. A slice of carrot, with the image of the Funky Olive printed on it, was on top. I also ordered the special Daiana Roll, which included cucumber, avocado, tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp and catch of the day in the special roll. Both items were large portions with great flavors.

Overall, we were impressed with the quality and presentation of the food, the portion sizes, and the service was very good.

Dinner:  Mother Flower. A recent post on Facebook asked where the best places to eat were in Cabo San Lucas. Several dozen people answered, ” Mother Flower”. This small restaurant, located on the corner of Francisco Madero and Vincente Guerrero just down from Cabo Wabo, offers Mexican delights. Decorated in Mexican themes with a mural of Mother Flower on one of the walls, the atmosphere is very pleasant. With about 20 seats at a combination of high-top wooden tables and chairs at the bar to the kitchen, the menu offers a few soups, tacos, local seafoods, and several chef’s favorites.

Our server asked us what we would like to drink – Chardonnay for me and Limonada mineral for Beth – and gave us some time to study the menu. I chose the beef soup with beans, bacon, onions, Chile Verde, and cilantro to start, and a Baja Fish Taco as my main course. Beth selected the Texas Flautas from the Chef’s Favorites without the cheese. The soup was served with flour tortillas, was delicious, and could be a meal in itself. The three Texas Flautas were huge (almost like burritos). They were good but a little too spicy for Beth. (For her, black pepper is a hot spice). So, she took the Baja Fish Taco on a flour tortilla with a white sauce, arbol salsa, coleslaw, and Pico de Gallo, and I dug into the Texas Flautas. I ended up taking two of the three chicken flautas home for another meal.

The food was very good, the service excellent and the atmosphere very pleasant. Mother Flower has been open for two years and is worth a visit.
