A Bond for the Ages: K-9 Sagus Retires from Police Service

Leaving a Lasting Legacy after 5 years of service

The K9 unit for the SSPE (State Public Security Agency) was initiated in 2020, in collaboration with a certified instructor from the Coast to Coast K9 Training School in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The unit began with four canines and their handlers, enhancing efforts to combat drug trafficking and distribution.

One remarkable member of this unit was Sagus, who, from a young age, showed exceptional talent in detecting various narcotics and weapons.

Recently, the SSPE held a retirement ceremony for Sagus, marking the end of his five years of dedicated service to state security.

Throughout his career, Sagus participated in numerous security operations conducted by the PEP (State Preventive Police), including inspections of people and transportation at Puerto Pichilingue, checkpoints, and operations across the state’s four penitentiary centers.

During his tenure, he made 77 positive detections, leading to the seizure of illicit narcotics and weapons. His contributions alongside his handler and fellow canines played a crucial role in mitigating drug-related crimes.

To honor his service, Luis Cancino, Secretary of Public Security, presented Sagus with a shield and his harness, symbolizing appreciation for his invaluable work.

As he transitions to retirement, Sagus will now live with a new family.

The adoption process requires interested individuals to undergo an interview, have no criminal record, provide a safe and spacious home, demonstrate financial capability for medical care, and, most importantly, pledge to treat him with the love and respect he has earned.

Thank you for your service, Sagus. Have a great life!
