Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will visit Los Cabos this weekend to officially kick off the long-awaited overpass project at the busy Fonaturroundabout in San José del Cabo.
Although the project was originally scheduled to begin on May 12, the formal start was delayed. President Sheinbaum is now expected to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony this weekend, according to Mayor Christian Agúndez.
The project was recently reviewed during a meeting between the mayor and officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), who presented its technical details. It was announced that construction will proceed in three shifts to expedite progress and reduce the timeline to under two years.
“This is not an everyday event. We’re very pleased that our colleagues from the SICT are joining us and that this project is finally becoming a reality. The president’s support has been crucial,” said Mayor Agúndez. “Work officially begins this weekend, and we’re taking all necessary precautions to minimize disruption to traffic. In fact, they’ve informed us that crews will work through the night to limit the impact on motorists.”
The construction will cover 1.1 kilometers, stretching from the Costa Azul area to the Magisterial neighborhood in San José del Cabo. According to the SICT, excavation is set to begin in about 15 days, although road adjustments have already started. This heavily trafficked area will see gradual changes aimed at minimizing congestion during construction and underground infrastructure work.
“The work on utilities and other essential services in the area will be handled carefully to avoid service interruptions,” added Agúndez. “If our president is attending the launch of this much-needed project, you know it’s a major step forward in improving a notoriously congested roundabout.”
This is great. What day and time will she be in San Jose del Cabo? Is the public invited to see the groundbreaking ceremony?
