The unchecked entry of 4×4 vehicles onto Los Cabos and Baja California Sur beaches threatens marine species that rely on these areas for nesting and reproduction, including turtles and several bird species.
Wildlife conservationist Graciela Tiburcio warned that sites such as “La Laguna” and nearby dunes have been turned into ATV trails, severely damaging ecosystems. Species like the Gallito Marino have vanished from these habitats.
Beyond wildlife loss, Tiburcio noted, the environmental damage could have wider consequences for the municipality.
The Baja California Sur Congress is drafting reforms to the Ecological Balance Law, while ZOFEMAT, the Federal Maritime Land Zone, is promoting a law to restrict vehicle access to beaches. Conservation groups are calling for the inclusion of technical criteria in the new regulations.
Until new rules take effect, authorities and experts urge beachgoers to avoid driving vehicles onto beaches to protect vulnerable species.
