Community Beach Center Leads Monthly Cleanups

With a strong commitment to environmental protection, the La Playa Community Center in San José del Cabo organizes monthly beach cleanups, drawing broad participation from residents, hotels, and agencies such as the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat).

The initiative aims to preserve the marine ecosystem and maintain clean beaches around the community. Alejandra Bringas, the center’s waste and recycling manager highlighted its growing impact.

“We collect about 150 to 200 kilograms of waste per cleanup,” Bringas said. “We hold these events monthly, with participation from both hotel staff and local volunteers, usually between 20 and 30 people each time.”

The center’s leadership has played a key role in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, engaging both residents and tourism industry stakeholders.

Among its partners is Zofemat Los Cabos, which not only supports the cleanups but also promotes environmental education through its Eco-Club program.

“At Eco-Club, we organize activities for children to teach them the importance of protecting our beaches,” said Diana Ruiz, a Zofemat environmental educator. “We do cleanups with them and show why it’s important not to litter, and to dispose of waste properly.”

Local hotels have also stepped up. Jennifer Castellano, sustainability coordinator at Hotel Zadún, underscored her team’s dedication.

“Our involvement is vital,” Castellano said. “We help protect the ecosystem by removing harmful waste. It’s our way of supporting the community and the environment.”

Through its cleanups, the La Playa Community Center not only works to keep coastlines free of debris but also raises awareness about the need to preserve natural resources, for today’s adults and the next generation.
