And they better be pristine as they should be
The growing awareness of nature conservation around the world has made the Blue Flag Award more and more important. This award significantly supports sustainable development and is given to just a small number of beaches that fit the criteria. Beaches wishing to receive the Blue Flag Award are expected to fully meet a total of 33 measurements. While some of these norms are mandatory, others are guidelines. The award is given for 1 year to the beaches that succeed in meeting the conditions. The beaches that maintain the criteria because of the examinations carried out every year are deemed worthy of the award again.
The Blue Flag program in Mexico is enforced by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an international non-governmental organization.
Inspections involve a comprehensive assessment of four core areas: environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety.

Inspectors review documentation related to environmental audits, water quality data, safety procedures, and other relevant information. Theyconduct on-site inspections to verify that all the rules are being followed. And they do this by the inch. They place a net on the sand and then go square by square and to 10” deep with small shovels to make sure that no garbage is buried such as cigarette buts, bottle caps, etc.
If a site fails to meet the Blue Flag criteria, its certification may be suspended or revoked.
This effort seeks to implement actions that guarantee safe, clean, and sustainable beaches for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Following up on the actions to maintain the highest standards, Rafael Álvarez, the municipal coordinator of ZOFEMAT (the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone), held a working meeting with managers and directors of private security from the hotel sector in Cabo San Lucas to prepare for the upcoming review of the Blue Flag designation.
The combined efforts of the public and private sectors are key to maintaining the quality standards required by the Blue Flag and continuing to position Los Cabos as a destination of excellence.
