Cerro Atravesado, known for its rich biodiversity, is facing challenges due to unleashed dogs. Wildlife, including babisuris (cacomixtles), skunks, and raccoons, has been threatened, and there’s also concern about health risks from uncollected dog waste. To address these issues, starting January 20, it will be mandatory for all dog owners to leash their pets and clean up after them.
This 4-mile out-and-back trail near La Paz is considered moderately challenging and takes roughly 14 minutes to complete. It’s a favorite spot for hiking and running, particularly busy during weekends. The trail offers stunning views of La Paz and surrounding mountains, with three cell phone towers accessible on foot. Although the path is not steep and is mostly an easy walk, there are a few rocky areas.
With the new regulations, dogs must be leashed at all times within the area, and owners are required to carry bags to collect their pets’ waste. Authorities urge compliance with these rules to ensure the protection of local fauna and to promote a respectful coexistence between visitors and the natural environment. “These measures are vital for preserving our ecosystem for future generations and fostering a responsible relationship with our natural spaces,” stated representatives from the Directorate of Civic Justice.
