The April Fishing Calendar is Here! Fonmar, the fund for marine conservation released its calendar of fishing tournaments for April. It all started on April 6 and 7 with the La Ventana Yellowtail tourney, followed by the Bulnes tourney in Cabo San Lucas on April 13 & 14. Millions for Infrastructure in Los Cabos. The federal government sent a check for nearly $40 million to be used for infrastructure in our Southern Baja state. The monies, said the governor, will be used to build a bridge on the road from Highway 1 to La Ribera, at the Santa Cruz community, which floods during the rainy season and leaves La Ribera isolated. The rest will be used to build and modernize rural roads and highways in the Mulege municipality between Tortugas Bay and Santa Eugenia.
Defend Todos Santos Movement Arises. The most recent urban planning program draft that the La Paz government has released has been furiously rejected by Todos Santos inhabitants. The program estimates that the magical town will grow from 12,000 to 150,000 thousand inhabitants in ten years and they plan to approve buildings of up to 4-5 stories – without proper sewage, water supply and power installations. The residents have come up with alternative propositions, are demanding that the government call for discussion meetings and have enlisted an attorney to fight. Stay tuned.
Los Cabos Government Protects East Cape Road. This will come as a surprise to you, but in a very unusual move, the Los Cabos government refused to grant a permit to the Vidanta and Playa Gorda developments to close the traditional East Cape road, even when they offered to build a new one up towards the mountains. “The decision,” said a government spokesperson, “also aims to keep open to the public the Zacatitos, Punta Gorda and other beaches along the way.”

On Saturday, April 13, the Cabo Beach Church by the Surfing Pastor will be taking donations of clothes, toys (no batteries), school items, perishable food, cleaning products and more, to benefit the Los Cabos Senior Center and the Los Cabos impoverished neighborhoods. Newest Mexican Airline to Fly to Cabo. Mexicana de Aviación, which President Andres Manuel López Obrador decided to acquire from the old airline that went bankrupt in 2010, will begin flying Monday, April 1st with a leased Boeing 737-800s aircraft from Mexico City’s new airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Angeles or AIFA for short). The airline is in trouble as just three months after it completed its first flight, it faces a U.S. $840 million lawsuit A Texas-based company hired by the Mexican government to provide a range of services to Mexicana de Aviación, including obtaining aircraft, sued the airline on Wednesday, accusing it of various breaches of contract. So says Conde Nast Traveler, mentioning that “With nearly 5,800 miles of coastline, Mexico has no shortage of beach destinations.” The chosen ones in our state are Balandra, Cerritos and Espíritu Santo Island in La Paz and Chileno in Los Cabos. Frontier Airlines Adds Flights to Cabo. Departing from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor airport, beginning on May 16th Frontier will now fly twice a week, Thursdays and Saturdays to Los Cabos International Airport This, is just after a few weeks since the airline discontinued its flights from Denver to Cabo. Let’s welcome them back!
Traffic Alert! Pavement Work Undergoing. The feds are – finally – covering potholes along the fourlane between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The job is currently ongoing from the San Jose International Airport to San Jose del Cabo, where a lane of the highway is closed to vehicle traffic. Be cautious, slow down, take your time and don’t bitch about it. You’ve been bitching about the potholes too long, now put up with the repairs or stay home!
Food Fest to Benefit 5 Organizations. The 11th Pazión Por La Paz annual food fest will take place on May 5th at the Paraiso del Mar residential complex in El Mogote, La Paz. El Mogote is that stretch of sandy land that you see across the La Paz Malecón with condo buildings on its end. There will be over 20 Chefs, wineries and live music – all included. Tickets are 3,200 pesos per person (about $190 bucks) and are for sale at the El Zarape restaurant, California Chicken and Paraiso del Mar. The event will benefit five different charity organizations.
Firefighters Call the Fire Department!The cabin of a firetruck in a La Paz station caught on fire and although it was put out quickly, it showed the terrible conditions in which some of the units are in. Someone organize a fundraiser, please!
