Los Cabos, the Most Expensive City in Mexico. The Mercer Human Resources firm released its latest study on the cost of living in 42 cities in Mexico. Los Cabos ended up in first place, followed by Cancun, Monterrey, Mexico City and Cuernavaca. Los Cabos is also Mexico’s tourist destination with the highest hotel room rate average, at $532 USD per night.
Two New Flights to La Paz. Volaris Airlines has announced two new flights to begin in July. One is from the beautiful colonial city of Guanajuato to La Paz on Tuesday and Thursday. The second one is from the industrial city of Monterrey in Northern Mexico on Thursday and Sunday. Expect to see lots more Mexican tourists in town!
Fishing Tournament in Loreto This Month. The final tournament of the “Fishing in the Five 2022-2023” series will take place in the magic town of Loreto, north of La Paz, on Sunday, June 25. Over 100 teams are expecting to compete for the approximately 60 grand in cash prizes for the largest Dorado (Mahi-Mahi). The cost is only 6,000 per team (about $350 USD). New Flight from Montreal Announced. Air Canada, which already flies to Los Cabos from Toronto and Vancouver, has announced a new flight from Montreal – Los Cabos this Winter. The schedule is yet to be posted.
New Cruise Ship to Arrive on December 12. The MS Rotterdam, operated by the Holland America cruise line, will be the first large cruise ship to navigate within the Sea of Cortes, leaving from Cabo San Lucas on December 12. Its itinerary covers La Paz, Guaymas (Sonora), Topolobampo and Mazatlan in the state of Sinaloa, Puerto Vallarta and back to Cabo. It’s a 5-day trip for now, as it will be a test supported by the coalition of governors of the Sea of Cortes.
More Mexicans Migrate to our State. The Statistics Institute revealed that nearly half of the Mexican population in Southern Baja are from other states and the numbers keep on growing. In Los Cabos, 2 out of 3 inhabitants are from other parts of Mexico. That represents an increase of 60 percent in 10 years. No wonder there’s such a lack of water everywhere.
Tourism Increasing in Mulege. The municipality, located 441 miles north of Cabo San Lucas on the Sea of Cortes, is attracting a high number of visitors. Mulege, with a beautiful river and gorgeous beaches, is home to Asuncion Bay, Tortugas Bay, Guerrero Negro, the Vizcaino Reserve of the Biosphere and several more, smaller communities.
New International Film Festival Coming. The Ciudad Insurgentes (formerly La Toba) will be hosting its 1st International Movie Festival of La Toba from October 2 to 6 this year and the organizers are inviting everyone interested in participating to sign up before August 27. Loreto Wins International Award. The quaint, magical town of Loreto, located 223 miles north of La Paz on the Sea of Cortes, was named Number 1 National Park outside of the U.S. The award was presented by TravelAwaits’ 2023 Best of Travel Awards, AllTrails and Luggage Free. Here’s what the jurors had to say: “Loreto Bay National Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Its pristine beaches, turquoise water ad vibrant marine life make it a top destination for snorkeling, kayaking and diving.” Congrats!
Sammy Hagar Opens New Beach Club. But not in Cabo. The 75-year-old “Red Rocker” opened its first Cabo Wabo Beach Club at the Waterfront Resort in Huntington Beach, California. Hagar opened the Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas downtown in 1990 and has opened franchises in the Las Vegas Strip and Hollywood Boulevard. He also launched his Cabo Wabo Tequila in 1996, selling it for $100 million 14 years later. He now owns a collection of Cabo Wabo spirit brands.
Two New Airstrips Coming. Santa Rosalia, the former mining town near the border with Northern Baja, will see one of its old airstrips refurbished, said Governor Victor Castro. Additionally, a second airstrip will be built near Tortugas Bay.
Spain Becomes Third Source of Tourists. According to FITURCA, the Los Cabos tourism fund, the arrival of tourists from Spain has grown to become our third tourist market, after the U.S. and Canada. Many of them arrive after a stop in Mexico City, but from late June to mid-September the Iberojet direct flight from Madrid will add to the arrivals.
New Fire Station Open. It is located in the rural community of Migriño, 15 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas on the road to Todos Santos. It has been used as a training camp for Cabo San Lucas firefighters and it will also serve the community of Migriño now.
