A total of 12 baby leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) were released yesterday by Sea Turtle Protection Network and the ASUPMATOMA organization volunteers. The eggs were found and rescued 2 months ago in the Pacific side of Cabo, at the Sunset beach of the Pueblo Bonito resort. The eggs had been placed in a warm nest as the cold temperature would have prevented their hatching. Says Wikipedia:” The leatherback sea turtle, sometimes called the lute turtle or leathery turtle or simply the luth, is the largest of all living turtles and the heaviest non-crocodilian reptile, reaching lengths of up to 2 metres and weights of 600 kg.” It is an endangered species protected by Mexican laws.
