Mar de fondo refers to powerful ground swells generated by distant storms. Unlike breaking waves visible from shore, these swells create strong underwater currents that can pull swimmers away from the beach without warning.

According to maritime authorities, waves are forecast to reach 7 to 9 feet with swells occurring every 22 to 26 seconds. The conditions will generate dangerous rip currents that can drag people offshore in beach zones, marina entrances, and bays throughout the municipality.
The phenomenon originates from weather systems stretching from Chiapas to Sinaloa and includes the entrance to the Gulf of California. Los Cabos beaches will feel the impact as swells move northward along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
