Brian Flynn, a Los Cabos Rock Legend

Brian Flynn is appreciated worldwide as one of the best guitarists on the planet. He resides in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Denver, Colorado, splitting his time between the two over the last 27 years, when not on tour.

I had a great interview with the Los Cabos Rock Legend Brian Flynn and his special lady, manager and wife, Angelica.

The International recording artist has been complimented as being one of the most phenomenal guitarists on the scene. Flynn has toured Russia, Europe, India, Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Recognition like that and the Brian Flynn Band's ability to play a vast array of music has allowed them to include performances with the biggest names in today's music industry in their long list of accomplishments.

Brian has been playing music for over 40 years, 27 of those years in Los Cabos. He played his first song in high school (a U.S. Colorado Springs boy) and knew this was his career for LIFE! He attended Colorado Mountain College and even taught there for a while. His father was a colonel in the military and Flynn was an Army brat and traveled a lot. In his late teens, he developed his music skills while spending a few years in the military.

His first concert was Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tony Joe White and Freddy King on May 22, 1972. His biggest musical influences growing up were Deep Purple and the Allman Brothers and later, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Tommy Bolin, Rory Gallagher, Toy Caldwell and Dickey Betts were his guitar influences. Tommy and Rory were the biggest influence on his slide guitar work. Hank Williams Sr. got him paying attention to music in general, songwriting and his country influence in rock and roll.

Flynn has been a full-time musician since 1987 with a variety of bands including Rockslyde, Brian Flynn Band, Brian Flynn All-stars, the Cabo Cowboys, the Flynn Johnson Project as well as others. He has had studio session work as well as solo acoustic shows and long-term duo projects with artists such as Jay Johnson of Skinny Molly, former BTO guitarist Mike Kelly and a new project with Mexican guitar icon Rod Levario. He is a lead guitarist, singer and songwriter whose genres include blues, country, rock, southern rock and rock Mexican.

His gear! Gibson Les Pauls, Fender Eric Clapton Strats, Deans, 56 Oahu Tonemaster Lap Steel and Taylor and Takamine acoustics. He really loved the support from Dean and Elliott Rubinson, but his SPECIAL guitar is his 89 Clapton Strat, rebuilt by buddy Dale Grover before his untimely passing. Angelica interjects that her favorite is Brian’s Cherry Sunburst Les Paul. Brian says the Clapton Strat has “got a SOUL of its own.”

He has become an internationally-recognized Blues and Rock guitarist, having shared the stage with Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Sammy Hagar, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Romantics, The Drifters, The Platters, Mitch Ryder, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, The Outlaws, Skinny Molly and a long list of others.

He has played with country artists such as Bobby Bare, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Brian’s blues exposure includes playing with the likes of Gatemouth Brown, Son Seals, Delbert McClinton, Jelly Bean Johnson, Sonny Landreth, and Tab Benoit.

He has funked it up with Bo Diddley and reggae artists Sheft-Hat Khenemu of Riddim Forz and Vince Black of Black Uhuru.

The Brian Flynn Band has also got spicy with Latino artists Poncho Sanchez and Jose Rossy of Puerto Rico and Cuba's own "Piel Canela", Grupo Vida.

The Brian Flynn All-stars (former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Point Blank and Patti Labelle) is a special side project which has gone on for some 20 years. He also spent a few years with the Cabo Wabo house band in the 1990s. While at the Cabo Wabo Cantina, a place of chaotic reveling, Brian and the band perfected their musical skills as a group (and as individuals), all the while accumulating rave reviews from around the world.

One of the first videos filmed in Cabo was during this time at Cabo Wabo Cantina.

Cabo Wabo allowed him the whole club in 2007 to celebrate his 50th birthday, a wild bash.

Brian has played in front of thousands on large stages as well as intimate venues. He loves his music and appreciates every moment at every show and the people who support him. You have not lived until you have heard him play the long version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's “Free Bird”.

His wife, Angelica, appropriately named, is his foundation. She is a Mexican lawyer, still working, and has time to be his manager, biggest fan, wife and mother to their children. They have been soul-mates for almost 10 years now. Angelica and Brian have seven children between them, with two teenage daughters, Kenya and Sydney still at home.

Brian was inducted into the Encyclopedia del Rock Mexicano the last month, an awesome accomplishment for an American musician. Brian and Angelica spent a week in Mexico City attending the Hall of Fame events before the official induction.

He has played with many great Mexican musicians and bands like El Tri, La Banda Bostik, Rod Levario, Armando Molina, Isidoro Negrete, Carlos Matta from Nuevo Mexico Band, Rene Vidal, Juan Hernández, Ricardo Ochoa, Alex Perales, members of Peace and Love, Nahuatl and many, many more. He greatly appreciates the marvelous support, particularly of the legendary Armando Molina.

Brian is considered a Cabo treasure by the local community, working regularly in charity events that benefit local children who have limited access to music, theatre and the arts.
