It is the time of the year when everybody needs to prepare.
The Pacific hurricane season will officially begin on May 15 and end on November 30. According to estimates by the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), 8 to 9 tropical storms are expected, along with 4 to 5 Category 1 and 2 hurricanes, and 4 to 6 Category 3, 4, or 5 hurricanes.
Baja California Sur is the state most affected by these phenomena, with a 13.8% incidence nationwide.
The Undersecretary of Civil Protection in Baja California Sur, Héctor Amparano, explained that the main objective of the State Civil Protection Council is to organize with government institutions and social organizations. He emphasized the need to strengthen a culture of prevention among authorities and citizens.
The goal is to improve the response capacity and action protocols of Civil Protection systems at their various levels. In addition, specialized courses are offered to professionalize emergency response personnel.
“The coordination of resources, actions, and will, as well as the preparedness of governments and the population, is essential to reducing risks in the face of the threat of a hurricane,” Amparano stated.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that, in the Pacific Ocean, the hurricane names this season are Alvin, Barbara, Cosme, Dalila, Erick, Flossie, Gil, Henriette, Ivo, Juliette, Kiko, Lorena, Mario, Narda, Octave, Priscilla, Raymond, Sonia, Tico, Velma, Wallis, Xina, York, and Zelda.
