The Old Lighthouse Should Be Open to the Public

The civil association Yenekamu is calling for the historic Cabo San Lucas lighthouse, known as Faro Viejo, to be transferred from private ownership to public hands. The group says the move would preserve the site for future generations.

Public access to the lighthouse ended years ago after a private consortium purchased the land, restricting entry. The association argues that Faro Viejo is a historic monument that should be managed by the federal Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT).

Felipe Marrón, president of Yenekamu, has urged authorities to make the site “a space for all” and to restore free public access.

Built more than 120 years ago, the Old Lighthouse is a cultural and architectural landmark. It is now owned by businessman Ernesto Coppel’s company, which has also limited access to the nearby beach, a move that has angered residents and activists.

Yenekamu’s mission is to strengthen community ties in Los Cabos by promoting awareness of the region’s historic, cultural, and natural heritage.

“To love, respect, and care for Los Cabos, we first need to know it,” Marrón said. “That’s why it’s important to recognize what we have and share it proudly with travelers. You don’t love what you don’t know.”
