The Los Cabos National System for Integral Family Development (DIF) is planning a new shelter to address the rising number of children in its care, with legal and technical groundwork already underway.

The current shelter, Una Luz en Mi Vida in San José del Cabo, is at capacity, said Sol Delgado, honorary president of DIF Los Cabos. The facility now houses about 40 minors, from newborns to 17 years old.

“The existing group home has been sufficient for years, but now the number of children exceeds the available space,” Delgado said. She stressed that the children receive full care, including proper nutrition and attention, but the building can no longer meet demand.

The new project calls for two large-capacity spaces to provide age-specific care for children and adolescents. While the location and construction start date have not been disclosed, planning for the site is in progress.
