Planning a trip to Espiritu Santo Island? You’ll need to hold off. Love is in the air, and the sea lions are busy.
Due to mating and pupping season, male sea lions become increasingly aggressive, prompting authorities to restrict access to the area for the safety of both wildlife and visitors.
The seasonal closure, in effect through August 31, was announced by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP).
Natalia Ruffo, Municipal Tourism Director, stressed the importance of the measure in protecting one of the state’s most vital ecosystems.
“These actions are essential to safeguard visitor safety and preserve the natural balance of our marine species,” she said.
Ruffo urged both residents and tourism operators to respect the restrictions, adding that responsible tourism plays a critical role in conserving Natural Protected Areas.
