One of only two regions in Mexico
This is thanks to a joint effort by conservation specialists, academics, and local authorities. This distinction was awarded by Environment for the Americas (EFTA), World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), and the American Bird Conservancy (ABC).
This certification recognizes cities that have implemented policies and actions to protect birds and their ecosystems. Being part of this global network not only strengthens the region’s environmental image but also opens new opportunities for international collaboration, ecotourism development, and the strengthening of educational programs.
Among the key actions that earned recognition was the update of the Management Plan for the Estero San José del Cabo State Ecological Reserve, and the monitoring and dissemination of priority species such as the Peninsular Masked Owl, the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and the Pygmy Owl.
Dr. José García head of the Habitat and Key Species Conservation Laboratory and Coordinator of the Extension and University Liaison Area of the University of Baja California Sur, emphasized that the UABCS, through its academic outreach programs, actively cooperates with other institutions, organizations, and communities in the region to promote biodiversity and ecological balance.
“Thanks to this certification, Los Cabos is positioned as a benchmark for bird conservation in Mexico, and our university reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with initiatives that promote ecological balance and sustainability,” said Dr. García.
