Behave, Big Brother will be watching you.
La Paz is set to introduce a smart traffic light system, a fundamental tool for automating signal synchronization and monitoring city traffic in real-time.
Mayor Milena Quiroga, who presented the system, stated that it would reduce wait times at the busiest intersections and help prevent traffic congestion. Additionally, it will enable an immediate response to incidents that disrupt traffic flow.
“Right now, the traffic lights are synchronized, but if something happens, like a power outage or a signal loss, they lose operability and efficiency. When that happens, operators must physically go and reprogram the system. By implementing remote monitoring at the control center, we can improve efficiency,” she explained.
The control center will feature cameras that monitor traffic light phases and capture high-resolution images to detect violations such as running red lights or lane invasions. During a system demonstration, officials showcased how the cameras can identify vehicles in real-time, even capturing license plate numbers and driver appearances.
“The information gathered will be directly linked to the Municipal Traffic Department. This will not only improve traffic flow but also enhance the supervision and enforcement of traffic regulations,” Quiroga emphasized.
She further explained that the system is currently in the programming phase and is expected to be operational before the end of April.
Ignacio Figueroa, the program director, will oversee the control center. He and his team will monitor city traffic and remotely adjust signal timings based on daily needs or special circumstances, such as festivals or holidays.
Mayor Quiroga also highlighted that this project is essential for promoting traffic education, reducing vehicle speeds, and ensuring drivers obey road signs. “The goal is for all of us to improve how we navigate our roads,” she concluded.
