Well, here’s a place with a wealth of information
The Allende Books bookstore, located on Callejón 21 de Agosto St. in downtown La Paz, features a collection of books dedicated to Baja California Sur and its natural beauty. This literary gem offers a range of high-end and affordable books about Baja California Sur.
This space is dedicated to promoting literature and culture, both local and general, providing a variety of works ranging from luxurious photography books to budget-friendly options for all. Prices range from 100 to 3,700 pesos (5 to 185 USD). Two invaluable books in its collection include “Sea of Dreams”, possibly the establishment’s most expensive book at 3,700 pesos. This large-format work features stunning photographs of the Sea of Cortez and the Baja California Sur coast—from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of California—captured by Christopher Suani, a marine biologist with over 30 years of experience, renowned for his ability to capture images of cetaceans.
The second book is “The Log of the Sea of Cortez” by John Steinbeck, which is particularly sought after by tourists in the city. As far as I know, Steinbeck had a deep affection for La Paz and even taught at the university.
The bookstore serves not only as a retail space but also as a reference and exchange center. Silvia Soto, the owner and manager, says: “We have books that are part of the bookstore. They are not for sale because they are hard to obtain, but they can be consulted here during business hours.”
From world-class marine photography to guides on local flora and fauna, this bookstore boasts many specialty books. Another focus is field guides on local wildlife, attracting numerous biologists and nature enthusiasts to the store.
Silvia explains: “We don’t buy books; however, we offer credits when people donate copies in good condition, preferably unmarked, based on their overall physical state. These credits can be used to purchase other used books available in the store.”
Soto added that they also participate in social initiatives through special sales, with proceeds benefiting various charities. They have supported dog rescue efforts, local paramedics, and Mexico Wildlife Marine Rescue, an organization dedicated to rescuing marine fauna throughout Baja. This organization generates income by selling some donated books.
Allende Books also hosts various cultural events, such as Southern California poetry readings and bilingual presentations on endemic species, aimed at strengthening the connection between literature, culture, and environmental conservation. The bookstore is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
