This is a place that I walk by every single morning or evening and say hello to the entire staff. I love everything about the vibe and the way I feel when I come to dine here.
La Penca at the Pescador Plaza in the San Jose del Cabo hotel zone is one of those places where I can watch sports, have a conversation or just have a good meal. The first time I walked in there, they had the most amazing crunchy thick tostada with an impressive spread of bean purée. I am obviously a huge bean lover because I grew up with them, but there’s also an art to making these so magnificent that they can be eaten on their own. Not too runny, but not too dry. Tender pieces of octopus, avocado puree and all these textures blend so well. I ate that about a year ago and I’m still thinking about it. Roasted chicken is one of my favorite dishes because it’s always guaranteed to be juicy and tender with a skin full of spices and crunch. It’s like they have to give you an extra piece or two of that flavorful skin to go with every little bit of chicken that you get to taste.
Edgar, the host, has the kindest attitude and will not only make you feel at home but take great care of you. The two-for-one margaritas are to die for and if you get on his good side, he’ll pass it on to you. Edgar says anyone can call him whatever they want. My husband often calls him papa or Homie and he’s just a man that makes you so happy.
They have put on the Kentucky Derby, football, soccer and basketball for us and always accommodate our sports times with a fancy dinner when we want to bring friends and just have some great steak and appetizers. Their atmosphere is welcoming yet vibrant and in a perfect location with indoor and outdoor seating.
The best part is that they also have a sister restaurant in downtown San Jose called Agave with similar dishes. Their atmosphere is a little more romantic and located right downtown where you can overlook all the pretty banners and people watch. They have an unbelievable tequila tasting that you can have before you go up and have dinner. Their ceviche is super delicious and full of flavor not to mention the little sweetness of those beets. You will not have a bad meal at either place and you’ll have a great time sitting at the bar watching the bartenders create artistic drinks full of flavor and a punch.
