Rare Sea Slugs Sighting in the East Cape

BY DAVID FLORES

Dozens of Glaucus Atlanticus, also known as Blue Dragon and Blue Ocean Slug, were seen in La Ribera floating, as they usually do, upside down as they use the surface tension of the water to stay afloat. This sea slug stores stinging nematocysts from the siphonophores within its tissues as a defence against predators. Humans handling the slug may receive a very painful and potentially dangerous sting. But they are beautiful!
