The Cabo San Lucas Fire and Rescue Department is hosting its first-ever shore fishing tournament next month to raise funds for operational uniforms, marking a new community fundraising effort during National Firefighter Month.
The inaugural ‘Pescando para Salvar Vidas’ (Fishing to Save Lives) tournament will take place on August 8 at Playa Migriño, featuring a guaranteed prize purse of 80,000 pesos distributed among the top three finishers.
Entry fees are set at 600 pesos per angler, with optional jackpots available at 100, 200, 300, 500, and 700 pesos. The tournament is open to all ages, including minors, and participants can compete using rod or lure. Permitted and restricted species will be announced during the official rules briefing before the competition begins.
Proceeds Support Firefighter Uniforms
According to local reports, all funds raised will go toward purchasing work uniforms for operational firefighting personnel. The event received backing from Fonmar, the municipal fisheries development agency, and the XV Los Cabos City Council.
During the tournament’s announcement, Operational Commander Hugo Ulises Sandoval and Operations Chief Javier Moreno thanked municipal and community partners for supporting activities that strengthen the fire department’s operational capacity and improve emergency response services.
Prize Structure and Registration Details
The guaranteed 80,000-peso purse will be divided as follows: 40,000 pesos for first place, 25,000 pesos for second, and 15,000 pesos for third. That prize structure alone makes the tournament competitive for serious shore anglers while keeping entry costs accessible for recreational participants.
Registration is currently open at the central Cabo San Lucas Fire Station and at Yuka’s Sportfishing shop. The event follows a pattern of community-supported fundraising efforts, similar to past tournaments that have benefited the department.
A Community Event at Playa Migriño
Playa Migriño, located along the Pacific coast between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos, offers wide shoreline access and is known for surf breaks and seasonal fishing opportunities. The beach has hosted community events before, including local horse racing competitions.
Nidia Yukari Ruíz, a local angler, will serve as operational organizer for the tournament. She was joined at the announcement by Juan Javier García Davis, director of the municipal Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, and Luis Ramón Cárdenas, local coordinator for Fonmar.
The tournament is designed not only as a fundraiser but also as a way to engage the fishing community and expat residents in directly supporting essential public services.
